Alphabet - ਪਹਿਲਾ

- ਸੱਸਾ - sassaa - Fourth letter of the Gurmukhi alphabet.

Name: sassaa
Shape:
Spelling: ਸੱਸਾ
Sound: 's' as the 's' in 'same' - see note*.
Type: Consonant
*Note:

Read carefully, for this is the last time it will be mentioned - although it applies to all letters from now on (ie, all consonants).

The sound of the consonant has an implicit 'a' after it so, unless a vowel sound is specified, it will have the implicit 'a' if it has a vowel sound.

So, Sassaa sounds like 'Sa' unless specified just after the consonant, if it has a vowel sound.

It is possible for a consonant to run into the next consonant without an 'a' between them.

Confusion: ਸ ਮ ਅ
Reading: When you first start, there is a fair chance that you might confuse ਸ with ਮ and ਅ. Remember the bar across the top in the case of ਸ.
Writing: The same confusion as with reading. You'll need to take a bit of care with this one - don't get into the habit of writing a series of letters and then writing a line across the top of them all - do the letters, one at a time and this will pay off when you don't turn a ਮ into a ਸ.
