(ਨ੍ਹ) - ਪੈਰ-ਹ - Paer hahha.

Name: Paer hahha
Shape: ਨ੍ਹ ਲ੍ਹ ੜ੍ਹ
Spelling: ਪੈਰ-ਹ
Drawing: ਪੈਰ means 'foot' and, as you will see over the last three pages in this section that we can add a shape to the foot of a letter, representing another letter. The important difference between having, say, ਪ੍ਰ instead of ਪਰ is that the first one says 'pra' whereas the second says 'para'. In effect, the implicit 'a' of the first letter has been missed out.

Paer letters are very easy to draw and you can usually follow on with the end of the downward stroke that finishes off the first letter you were drawing as in the case of the ਨ in the animation.

Sound: The effect of a paer haha is to raise the pitch of the voice when it is said. Like the adhak, this can change the meaning of words in Punjabi, so it is important. In English (if writing English is what you want to do), you can use it to aspirate letters such as the 'wh' in 'what' ('ਵ੍ਹਾਟ') for instance.

As you might recall from the alphabet introduction page, there are letters with a paer-haha already built in. These are effectively the previous letter in the alphabet with a paer hahha,
ie:     ਗ੍ਹ = ਘ;     ਜ੍ਹ = ਝ;     ਡ੍ਹ = ਢ;     ਦ੍ਹ = ਧ;   and,     ਬ੍ਹ = ਭ.
